Lunch in the Canteen

June 11, 2010

The Canteen is a really cool little spot on Gloucester Road in Bristol, it’s in a building that not so long ago was derelict and was a general hang out spot for street drinker…

Now it has been made over as a community space, with work spaces and studio for all kinds of people such as designers and artists, an event space, a body space (a studio for dance/yoga etc) go see their website; Coexist

It has a really nice sun trap terrace…

“The Canteen; Run by a sister company alongside Coexist, The Canteen is the place to come for lunch or dinner If you like good food that’s super tasty, grown locally and totally affordable. With live music seven nights a week and all your favourite drinks its hard to stay away. A recent quote from Venue says “The bar staff are lovely, the food is amazing, its excellent value for money, a friendly warm atmosphere and a real flagship for Bristol’s Cultural Quarter”. WOW. They go on to say “it’s made such a positive contribution to the landscape of the area, and has become a real cultural hub. It’s such a wonderful concept, and really inspiring” We agree and thanks to all those that come down regularly and make it such a great place. If you haven’t been down then get a wriggle on.”

I went for lunch on Monday…

They have art made from fridge doors; this changes now and again…

They have books, magazines and papers to read…

A piano…

Flowers everywhere…

Bristol beer in the taps…

And anywhere with proper ginger beer gets a big thumbs up!

And a cute box for feedback…

I ordered the Cornish Gurnard… you get a really cute table number…

And before your food arrived you get a little bowl of free soup to keep you going… a really nice touch, especially if it’s busy…

And you pick your food, but it comes with lots of different salads which you don’t choose its a surprise… I always leave the Canteen satisfied but not too full as all the food is wholesome and healthy

This time I had a butter bean, a lentil and a cous cous salad. I didn’t manage a dessert today but have had a banoffee pie here, I recommend saving room, or if not have a little chocolate truffle… but beware they contain Guarana, better than a whole can of red bull!

Go check it out!
